Internet Throttling
Internet Throttling
What is Throttling?
Throttling
is the term used when the Internet Service Provider (ISP) limits your bandwidth
after you've reached a preset monthly data limit, but it can also occur when an
ISP decides to slow certain online destinations. It is also referred as Bandwidth Throttling. It
is the intentional speeding up or slowing down of an Internet service. it is a
reactive measure employed for regulating the network traffic and minimizing the
bandwidth congestion.
Is Internet Throttling is Illegal?
Cell phone providers can
legally throttle customers Internet speeds to reduce
congestion during peak hours or in densely populated cities; however, the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has said that throttling may
become illegal if companies limit their customers Internet speeds
in a “deceptive or unfair” fashion.
The following wireless providers have been accused
of data throttling:
- Verizon
Wireless
- Sprint
- StraightTalk
Wireless
- Cricket
- Net10
Wireless
- Solavei
- Virgin
Mobile
- Boost
Mobile
- MetroPCS
How throttling affects a regular internet user?
- Buffering while streaming videos or
low-quality video streams.
- Latency issues while gaming that results in
excessive lag.
- Slow download and upload speeds, especially on
a peer-to-peer network.
If you’re experiencing slower speeds on the aforementioned services then
you should opt to bypass throttling.
How can I detect Throttling?
By now you’re aware that ISPs are deliberately slowing down your
internet speeds. There are different ways to gain immunity from throttling.
However, it is important to determine that the problem is indeed Throttling. Organizations
like Comcast and other companies are known to use Sandvine
congestion-management software to continue with their process of throttling.
Speed-test won’t help in this regard.
Tools for detecting Internet Throttling:
Google Video Quality Report: It gives you information
about your connection the Google’s streaming servers for YouTube. Sometimes
when you’re having a blast watching videos on YouTube and suddenly the video
resolution just goes down. It’s probably due to throttling. However, to confirm
that you can head on to the tool listed above and test out if you’re a
connection is fast enough to support the resolution. If you’re paying for a
fast connection and not getting the same speeds, you’re another victim of
internet throttling.
Internet Health Test: It is a free tool for detecting the
throttling. It is developed by the youth at FightForTheFuture. The main purpose
of the tool was to make people figure out if throttling occurs on their
connection. The tool tests out the internet connection speeds on different
servers and services. However, it can’t really target specific protocol-based
services such as streaming videos, P2P, etc. if there is a huge difference between
the connection speeds then there’s no doubt that you are a victim of
throttling.
Can a VPN stop throttling?
The best way to prevent your ISP
from throttling your service is to use a VPN provider.
A VPN encrypts your Internet traffic and redirects it to a remote
server. Using a VPN will stop most throttling performed by
an ISP, but can't help when the throttling is a result of
overusing data.
How can I bypass Internet Throttling using a VPN?
- Get the reliable VPN service.
- Go to 'Official Site' of VPN and 'Sign Up' your account.
- Download and install the VPN client on your Android phone.
- Enter your Log-In ID and Password.
- Select the nearest 'VPN Server' Location
